Cold weather is on its way!

Now that the weather is cooling down make sure to increase your outdoor pet's food intake. They will require it to create more heat to keep themselves warm. Also, don't forget to give them a warm, clean, dry shelter out of the wind.

It's hard to say goodbye

Summer time is heating up!

Always make sure your pets have plenty of fresh clean, water as the temperatures rise. Also make sure that your pets have a shady spot to get into to avoid the sun and heat stroke.
If your pet does over heat, rub rubbing alcohol under their armpits and on their groin area. It helps them cool down quicker.
Lots of us love to take our dogs swimming in the summer. Always remeber to dry their ears so they don't get a yeast infestion.

Protect your horses from Potomac Fever

Potomac Horse Fever (equine monocytic ehrlichiosis) is an inflammatory gastrointestinal disease that affects horses of all ages. It is an infectious and contagious disease most common in spring and summer. This disease is transmitted to horses via a bacteria, Ehrlichia risticii which has been recently renamed Neoriketssia ristici. This bacteria is associated with a parasite of freshwater snails. The bacteria also infects the larvae of mayflies and caddis flies which live in fresh water.
Make sure to get your horse vaccinated for Potomac Fever and always turn lights off around water sources at night to avoid attracting flies that carry this and other diseases.

Pull Your Horses Shoes In the Winter

Don't forget to pull your horses shoes in the winter. Shoes can accumulate snow and ice, and your poor ponies will be walking on snowballs, which is defiantely not good for them.

Deadly Antifreeze

Make sure that you don't have any antifreeze in areas where your pets have access. They like the sweet aroma and taste of it, and it can be deadly for them.

Older dog?

When the weather gets cold make sure that you let your older dogs and puppies in a warm, sheltered area... in the house would be the best. Older and younger dogs, just like humans, are more susceptible to the extreme weather. Please protect them.

Bad doggy breath?

Does your pup have bad breath? If you feed them "human" food, it may be the cause. Always be sure to check their teeth, because sometimes an abscessed tooth can be the cause. If they just have chronically stinky breath, or have plaque build up, try to brush their teeth daily with an enzymatic toothpaste. It should help.

Don't forget to wipe your dog's feet in the winter.

Always remeber to wipe your dogs feet when they have been outside in the cold weather. There is alot of salt and other chemicles on the roads, as well as antifreeze, which can be lethal for your loved pets.
It is also a good idea to trim the long hairs between your pup's toes so he or she doesn't collect snow and ice in them.

Increase your pet's food in the cold weather.

If you have outdoor pets, or if you have very active pets, make sure to increase their food when the temperature drops. The extra protein and fat is needed to keep them warm and healthy during the winter freeze.

Alot of us keep our pet cages and aquariums near windows. It allows our pets to get some sunlight and see the outside world. In the winter try to cover their cages and aquariums at night with a blanket, if you don't already. It will help keep them warm and sheltered from the drafts, and help them sleep better. Remember to keep an eye on the blanket edges, and not let them hang where some of our mischevious pets can get to them! Always keep an eye on your fish and reptile thermometer. You may have to bump it up to keep the temperature constant. Also, try to not put your cages in front of door where the cold breezes can affect your pets.

Protect your cats when it gets cold.

If you, or your neigbours, have outdoor cats, always remeber to tap on the hood of your vehicle before you start it. When the weather gets cold, cats will climb up next to warm engines to warm up. Starting up your vehicle could be fatal for the kitty.

Help prevent colic with your horses in cold weather.

When the weather drops below freezing horses tend to not want to drink. Always make sure your horses have plenty of clean, ice free, open water. We always tend to feed our horses more when the weather freezes, so they are more prone to getting impacted if they are not drinking enough. One great tip to make your horses drink when the weather gets cold is to pour some non-iodized table salt on their grain or sweet feed. Try to not put too much on, as some horses are finicky. A few hand fulls should make them thirsty enough to get a good drink. Give it a try!

Now that 2/3 of the country is in a freeze make sure all your pets are protected. Here are a few things to remeber.
1) Always be sure that your pets are sheltered from the cold. If you have outdoor animals try to bring them indoors when it gets this cold. Pets, just like us, are prone to getting frostbit, so please keep them warm. Make sure they always have a way to get out of the wind. Be sure that they have dry, warm bedding.
2) Be sure that your pets have plenty of water. If they are outside pets, make sure that their water isn't frozen. Lack of water will cause dehydration. In the case of horses lack of water will cause colic, which will kill them.
3) If you have indoor animals, don't leave them outside for very long. Unlike outdoor pets, they don't grow enough hair to keep them warm.
4) If you blanket your horses, make sure that once the weather warms you take their blankets off, or they will shed their hair. If you notice that your horses are sweating with hteir blankets on during the day from running and playing, take them off during the day. Just like you and I, when we sweat and then get cold our bodies get robbed of heat alot quicker than normal. Blanket the ponies at night.
